On Dec. 24, 1912, James M. Clayton and "Bell" Johnson were married in Dallas, TX., according to TX. County Marriage Records for 1837-1965.

*Note: Bell's full name was: Sarah Belle McCann, b. Feb. 9, 1854 in Troy, IA. and d. Apr. 9, 1942 in Dallas, TX. Belle was married first to Edwin Ruthven Johnson on Sep. 15, 1872 in Memphis, MO. Edwin d. Oct. 8, 1907 in Quincy, IL.

According to his May 27, 1922 U. S. Passport Application (in the county of Dallas, state of TX.), James M. Clayton was applying for a U. S. passport, accompanied by his wife, Belle Johnson Clayton. He solemnly swore that he was born Aug. 25, 1851 in Mooresville, Lee County, Mississippi, His father was B. L. (Benjamin Lockhart) Clayton, born in AL., now deceased.
James was a permanent resident of Dallas, TX. where he followed the occupation of cotton buyer.
He intended to go abroad temporarily on a pleasure trip (to Great Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Switzerland, Holland, Belgium and Austria) and intended to return home with one year.
James was described as 70 years old, 5'9" tall, with a fair complexion, round face, blue eyes and gray hair, a high forehead, regular nose, medium mouth and a round chin.
The person testifying to his identification, was James' stepson, H. E. Johnson, who had known him personally for 16 years and knew that James was born in Mooresville, Mississippi on Aug. 25, 1851.

James died at the summer home of his son, Ben.
Clayton was a resident of Oklahoma until 1918 when he moved to Dallas. He is survived by his daughters, Mrs Frank Anderson & Mrs J. T. Barbee and sons William & Ben Clayton.

Body of James Clayton To Be Buried Here
Funeral services for James Monroe Clayton, of the Anderson-Clayton Cotton Co., who died in Bar Harbor, Me., Thursday, will be held at the home of his daughter, Mrs. F. E. Anderson, 1300 Classen blvd., at 4:30 p.m., Saturday.
Clayton, with his wife, Mrs. Bellee Johnson Clayton, was spending the summer at the Maine home of his son, W. L. Clayton, of Houston, Tex.
Mr. and Mrs. W. L. Clayton and the widow are accompanying the body to Oklahoma City. They will arrive Saturday.
Clayton was born in Mississippi 75 years ago. He lived for many years in Tennessee, coming here in the early 1900's. He moved to Dallas, Tex., in 1918.
Clayton is survived by his widow and four children, Mrs. Anderson, Mrs. J. T. Barbee, Knoxville, Tenn., and W. L. and Benjamin Clayton of Houston.
Dr. W. H. B. Urch, pastor of Central Presbyterian Church, will officiate.
Pall bearers will be M. D. Anderson and C. O. Lambert of Houston; George Cleveland, W. C. Witmer and N. J. Reynolds, of Dallas, and J. A. Spencer, Athens, Tex.
