Patrick Luther Patterson, the son of Benjamin S Patterson of Kentucky and Martha J Peck Patterson of Tennessee, was born 1 August 1846 in Lumpkin County, Georgia. The Patterson family had moved back and forth between Tennessee and Georgia until Patrick's father, Benjamin, was conscripted into the army of the Confederacy in 1863. Patrick had already left home and on 1 November, 1862, he lied about his age and joined Capt, Buster's Company, 32nd Regiment of the Kentucky Volunteer Infantry.
Patrick Luther Patterson spent most of his time in the hospital at Somerset, Kentucky following his 1862 enlistment. He had contracted measles. He was mustered out on 12 August, 1863 and, being young and full of adventure, joined the 13th Kentucky Cavalry one month later, in Clinton, Kentucky. After his discharge from the service on 10 January, 1865, Patrick, six feet tall with dark hair and blue eyes--a dashing man in uniform-met Gilla Ann Combest. The young couple was married in Russell County, Kentucky.
