John Callaham, son of Nicholas (Jr.) and Mary (Green) Callahan, was born near Richmond Virginia in 1770. He was the brother of Elisha Callaham (Memorial #82810540). In his early life he raised tobacco, rolling it to market in hogshead containing several hundred pounds. It was drawn by a mule hitched between shafts attached to each end of the hogshead.

September 24, 1855, John died in Level Land, Abbeville County, South Carolina. His burial was in the Little River Baptist Church Cemetery.

The union of John and his first wife, Nancy Jarrett Callaham was blessed with twelve children. (Married: 02 APR 1792 in, Lunenburg, Virginia)

In Level Land, South Carolina, about twenty miles from Abbeville, South Carolina, there is a church with a cemetery called the Callaham/Carwile Cemetery. The church is the Little River Baptist Church established August 27, 1791, by the Callaham and Carwile families.

In the cemetery, there is a large memorial stone to John Callaham and Zachariah Carwile. Under John Callaham's name, the stone reads:

Born in Virginia. 1770.
Migrated to South Carolina, 1790.
Died, Level Land, 1855.
First wife, Nancy Jarrett - three of twelve children of this union married sons of Zachariah Carwile.
Second Wife, Nancy Pinson - Eleven children by this marriage.

Donated land for Little River Church property.

The bottom of the stone reads:
To the memory of these pioneers who settled along Little River near this spot and as a tribute to their devotion and service to country and to God, this stone is erected by their many descendants.

Many of the Callahams died in 1855. We were told it was from atyphoidepidemic.
