Harriett (Penn) Austin/Allen was born in England to Thomas and Elizabeth (UMN) Penn. She had one known sister, Mary.

Harriett and William would have two children:

Mr. John William Austin
Ms. Margaret Austin

William died on 24 December 1857.

Harriett met another recent widow, Benjamin Allen, son of John and Sarah (UMN) Allen. Benjamin was also originally from England, and he had been left with three young daughters, Anne, Sarah and Mary, after his wife's death.

Benjamin and Harriett married on 1 November 1860. Soon, three more children would be born between them:

Mr. Henry Allen
Mr. Edward Allen

Sadly, three-month-old Edward would pass away from Consumption on 17 March 1865.

Less than one month later, on 9 April 1865, Harriett also succumbed to Consumption.
