Edward M. Dunkel Jr., 88, 740 Gardner Lane, Tyrone, died Sunday at Hearthside Nursing and Rehab Center, State College.

He was born in Taylor Township, Centre County, son of Edward M. and May (Buck) Dunkel. He married Betty Jane Updike Aug. 27, 1948, in Philipsburg.

Surviving are his wife of 60 years, Betty; children: Dorothy May Barninger (Mike) of Mount Holly Springs, Pa., Donna Kay Walker (Doug) of Tyrone, Linda Sue Yaudes (Mark) of Tyrone, Karen Marie Harpster (Dan) of Grazierville, Edward M. Dunkel III (Mary Ann), James Ronald Dunkel (Roberta), Timothy L. Dunkel (Terri) and stepdaughter, Barbara Jean Friday (William), all of Tyrone; 22 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was the last of his immediate family, being preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, three sisters and a daughter, Jane Harris.

He was the oldest member of Northwood Baptist Church and was attending the Warriors Mark Bible Baptist Church. He was a former member of the Gideons.

He was an Army veteran of WWII, serving in the Pacific Theater.

Mr. Dunkel served as a Taylor Township supervisor for 34 years and previously worked at the Pennsylvania Railroad for five years and was a school bus driver for 15 years.

A funeral service and flag presentation will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2008, at Warriors Mark Bible Baptist Church with Pastor Steven E. Burns officiating. Interment will be at Bald Eagle Cemetery.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today, Dec. 30, 2008, at Derman Funeral Home Inc., Tyrone.
