He enlisted in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, May 8, 1861, and mustered into federal service at Washington DC July 27 as a private with Co. H, 7th Pennsylvania Reserves, aka 36th Pennsylvania Infantry. Wounded in the left side at the 2nd battle of Bull Run and died thereafter, although there is a discrepancy in his alleged date of death. While the tombstone date is used here, December 10, 1862, was also reported. It is virtually certain that he died in his "21st year," not "22nd." In 1892, his stepmother applied for a mother's pension under the name "Henry Crall."
Given that they lived in a region called now and then "Kralltown," the spelling of the last name was most likely with a "K."
