Mary E. (Spurgeon) Hughes died at the age of 101 years, 4 months, and 6 days.

Mary E. Hughes, 101, a lifelong resident of Montana, Kansas, died at 7:25 p.m. Tuesday, August 1, 2006, at the Good Samaritan Center in Parsons, Kansas, where she had resided since November 2003.

She was born March 25, 1905, near Montana, Kansas to Chester A. and Essie E. (Shields) Spurgeon.

She attended her first term of school at Pleasant Valley. The family moved one mile north of Montana when she was six years old. She finished the 8th grade at Montana and later graduated from Labette County Community High School in Altamont.

Following high school graduation, she taught one term of school.

She and Jim L. Hughes were married on November 27, 1925 at Muskogee, Oklahoma, where they lived briefly before returning to Montana. He preceded her in death on January 15, 1965.

She was a homemaker.

She was a member of the Center Chapel Club, L.A.P.M. (Ladies Auxiliary Patriarch Militant) and the Rebekah Lodge.

Her hobbies included ceramics, sewing, gardening, and canning.

Survivors include one daughter, Leta Rose Deckard of Park City, KS; three grandsons, James Deckard and wife, Becky of Marquette, KS; Dwayne Deckard and wife, Liz, of Wichita, KS; and Steven Hughes of Dallas, TX; and five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one son, Chester T. Hughes on June 5, 2004; two brothers, Ruple Spurgeon and Curtis Spurgeon; and one sister, Estaline Spurgeon.

Funeral Services are scheduled for August 4, 2006 at the Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home in Parsons, KS. Burial will be in Mitchell Cemetery, near Oswego, KS.

In lieu of flowers, the family has suggested memorials be made to the Rebekah Lodge. These may be left at or mailed to Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home, P.O. Box 374, Parsons, KS 67357.
