Norvell Churchill served in Co. L,1st Michigan Cavalry during the Civil War.On July 2,1863 at Hunterstown,Pennsylvania,he saved General George Custer from capture by southern cavalry.During a mounted charge by two companies of the 6th Michigan,Custer was unhorsed and surrounded.As the General's aide,Churchill came to the rescue,fighting off the enemy while Custer climbed on the back of the private's horse.They made their way back to the safety of the Michigan Brigade's lines and freedom.
