Edith Sweitzer Whelpley, 93, of Phoenix, Arizona died at 2:20 a.m. Saturday, March 15, 2008, at the Immanuel Care Center in Peoria, Arizona. She was born on July 22, 1914, in Cobden, Illinois. She married Henry Jeorme Whelpley, also of Cobden, on Oct. 1 1938. Mr. Whelpley was a carpenter by trade and they left Coden and headed west and after working on various jobs in several states, they settled in Phoenix, Ariz. in 1946.
Edith was preceded in death by her parents, Charles August Sweitzer and Mary Stegle Sweitzer, her husband Henry, sisters Mildrew Harrell and Mary Rendleman; brothers Paul and Clyde Sweitzer. She is survived by her brother Clement James Sweitzer, sons Gordon, Gerald, Henry Allen and Edward; daughters-in-laws Theresa and Barbara Ann, grandchilderns Ronald, Michelle, Christine Miller, Geoffrey, Amy, Shane, Laurel Briggs, Mike and Ann Serapiglia, and numerous great-grandchildern, nephews James, Darrell, and Mike Sweitzer and niece Sherry Ann Urbano and Anne Marie Holley.
Edith was a homemaker for most of her life, was active in her church, St. Mathew, and liked camping and traveling. She and Henry will be interned at Greewood Memorial Lawn in Phoenxi, Ariz.
