Dr. Abe A. Newmark, 97, of 112 E. Sheridan Ave., died the night of Dec. 25, 2008, in Jameson Memorial Hospital. Born Jan. 15, 1911, in Lithuania, he was a son of the late Morris and Ida Schwartz Newmark.
He married the former Esther L. Lebo on Nov. 22, 1933. She died on April 13, 1977.
Dr. Newmark was a pediatrician affiliated with the former New Castle (St. Francis) Hospital and Jameson Memorial Hospital. His private practice began in 1937 and continued for 40 years until his retirement in 1977. He also had been the New Castle School District school doctor. A 1927 graduate of New Castle High School, he also graduated in 1931 from the University of Pittsburgh and was a summa cum laude graduate of Jefferson Medical School in Philadelphia, in 1934. He served as a second lieutenant with the Army Reserves. He was a member of the American Medical Association and the American Pediatric Association. He was a member of Temple Hadar Israel.
Survivors include one daughter, Phyllis Ann Newmark of Pittsburgh; one son, Charles S. Newmark of Chapel Hill, N.C.; three grandchildren Steven Newmark of Charlotte, N.C., Beth Newmark Jones of Fairfield, Conn., and Erica Newmark Krieg of Durham, N.C.; and six great-grandchildren. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a brother, Dr. Julius Newmark; a sister, Hilda Goodman; and his companion, Phyllis Murphy.
No calling hours are planned. A graveside service will be conducted at 3 p.m. tomorrow at Tifereth Israel Cemetery. Rabbi Martin Shor will officiate.
