James Devolson Bamford was a sea Capt. with his brother William Wells Bamford. They married sisters and lived near each other on Wolfe Island. They sailed together on the Great Lakes until during a bad storm James known as J.D. was swept over board and drowned. His body was never recovered but a stone was put here in his honor. His wife Rachel is buried on Wolfe Island. Wells loved his brother and when his wife had a little boy born November 20, 1867, about a month later, he was named James Devolson Bamford after his Uncle. This James was to be known as Valtie and always lived on Wolfe Island and at times in genealogy has been mistaken for J.D. His birth year is estimated at 1837
