James McClure Gaston was born shortly after his family settled in Anderson County, Texas; his older brother, William, a founder of Dallas, Texas had persuaded his parents to emigrate to Texas in the early 1850's.
James was too young to enlisted during the Civil War, but knew well the sacrifice, having two brothers, George & Robert, dying during the conflict.
James McClure Gaston was married twice: his first wife was Miss Ola Travis Allen; whom he married on December 17th 1879. James & Ola had two sons: Allen, who died in infancy and Sawnie; who died at the age of 11.
After Ola died in 1889, James married Mary Alice Spangler, daughter of Danial Uriah Spangler and the former Ann Elizabeth Parr. This union would have two children: John (1899) and Dorothy (1902-1989).
James and Mary Alice made their home in Kaufman; where James owned a large farm and was treasurer of Kaufman Company. He departed this life on April 4th 1930 and was laid to rest in the Spangler - Gaston Family plot in Kaufman Cemetery near his infant son, John.
