Lt. Col. Garold E. Reed, age 87, passed away at University Hospital.
Garold was born November 8,1916, the son of Wilbert E. Reed & Amanda E. Hughes in Viroqua, Vernon County Wisconsin, died April 17, 2004 in Madison, Dane County, Wisconsin, aged 87 Years, 5 months and 9 days and was buried there in the family plot in the Forest Hill cemetery
He spent most of his time on the farm until 1935. He then worked with soil conservation, as a carpenter and in construction until January 1941, when he joined the U.S. Army.
He served during World War II, the Korean conflict and in the Vietnam era. In 1942, he graduated from officer's candidate school at Fort Monmouth, New Jersey.
On April 13, 1943, Garold was united in marriage to Cleo Lavold, in Viroqua, where they just celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary. During his military career he served in areas outside of the 48 states, such as Hawaii, Alaska, Japan, Germany and France. Garold retired from active duty on March 1, 1964. He went back to construction work and was employed with Fish Building Supply until his retirement on Dec. 1, 1980. After his retirement he volunteered for many years with the Middleton Outreach Ministry food pantry.
He was a member of St. Luke's Lutheran Church, the Military Officer's Association of America, the Fraternal Order of the Eagles Aerie No. 2707 and of the Reserve Officers Association.
Garold is survived by his wife, Cleo; a son Glenn E Reed and daughter-in-law, a daughter Carol Lynn Reed and son-in-law, five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, a sister, and two sisters-in-law.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Ernest "Bud," Loren "Jim" and Virgil "Bill" Reed; a sister-in-law, Clara Reed; and a brother-in-law, Ed Suhr.
Burial was in Forest Hill Cemetery.
