M. E. Wakefield was a well known oil operator in this section. He died at his home in Brownwood. He maintained a home in Cross Plains. He brought in the discovery well in the Cross Plains pool in 1926. For 11 years, Mr. Wakefield was president of the First State Bank of Cross Plains and was at one time superintendent of schools in Cross Plains. Mr. Wakefield served as mayor of Cross Plains for one term. He was a member of the Church of Christ, Masonic Order, Knights of Pythias, Lions Club, and the Shrine Order.

Services were held in the Brownwood Church of Christ.

Survived by his wife; three children - M.E. Wakefield, Jr, Juanita Wakefield, and Nelson Wakefield.
