Esther Balla was born Eszter Szabó, the daughter of Franz and Eszter Szabó. In about 1875, she married István ("Stephen") Balla (1858-1930) in the village of Eszény. Esther and Stephan had at least six children together between 1877 and 1892: Stephen, Julianna, Alexander, Vera, and Zsofia. Soon after the birth of their last child, Esther's husband abandoned them in Eszény, having left Hungary for the United States. In 1907, along with her daughter Zsofia, Esther came to the United States, joining her sons Stephen and Alexander, and her daughter Julianna. She was later reunited with her estranged husband and eventually moved to California, where she died in 1925.
