Roye Cecil McCormick was the third illegitimate son of Isabella McCormick. At the age of 9 months, in 1911, he was removed from her custody along with his half sister, Iva McCormick.

Approximately three months after being removed from the custody of his biological mother Isabella McCormick and being placed in the custody of the Children’s Home and Aid society of Illinois in Chicago On June 26, 1911, Roye McCormick was placed in the home of the widow, Fannie Guth Zimmerman and her 13 year old son Enoch, in Groveland, Illinois. Forty six year old Fannie was the widow of John Zimmerman, and the daughter of Peter and Veronika Birkey Guth. She was a Mennonite.

On January 5, 1920, he was 10 years old, living with Fanny and her natural child, Enoch Zimmerman, age 23 (1920 Federal Census). Roy was apparently well-treated in the Zimmerman home. His nickname was "Tinker" according to his obituary.

Unfortunately, on January 19, 1923, 12 year old Roy died of typhoid fever. He was buried in the Manito Cemetery -AKA the Amish Cemetery - AKA the Evangelical Mennonite Cemetery (located at NE ¼, SE ¼ Sec. 26, Groveland Township, Tazewell Co., IL) [Death Certificate of Roy McCormick Zimmerman ,office of the Tazewell County Clerk , Pekin, IL, and "Index of Cemeteries in Tazewell County" located at the Tazewell County Historical Society, Pekin, Illinois]. His funeral was attended by his brother-in-law, Iva's husband - Nyle Bertsche and Nyle's mother, Phoebe. Iva was not able to attend as she was caring for 2 week-old Milton. His tombstone reads "Roy McCormick Zimmerman" although there is no evidence that he was ever adopted. The following obituary appeared in the Morton Illinois Newspaper shortly after his death:

"Roy Zimmerman, the adopted son of Mrs. Fannie Zimmerman,
died at his home in Groveland last Friday morning, Jan. 19, 1923.
His illness started with a slight cold which grew worse and developed
into pneumonia. Roy seemed on his road to recovery from this illness,
when suddenly it changed into typhoid-pneumonia and during the two
weeks just proceeding his death, he was in a very serious condition.
Roy was always a happy little fellow and was liked by all who knew
and associated with him. He leaves many friends and schoolmates who
mourn the death of their happy little friend "Tinker" as he was commonly
known.
Roy McCormick Zimmerman was born May 11, 1910 and died at his
home in Groveland, Ill., Jan. 19, 1923 at 1:45 a.m. at the age of 12 years,
8 months and 8 days.

Fannie Zimmerman from the Children’s Home and Aid Society of Chicago.
He is survived by his foster mother, Mrs. Fannie Zimmerman, and son
Enoch, and one sister, Mrs. Iva Gertrude Bertsche of Graymont, Ill. Very
little is known of his other relatives.
In his early youth he accepted Jesus as his personal Savior and on April
11, 1920, he joined the Defenseless Mennonite Church of Groveland, of
which he remained a faithful and active member until Jesus called him
from this life to his home beyond.
Call not back the dear departed,
Anchored safe where storms are o’er;
On the borderland we met them
Soon to meet and part no more
When we leave this world of changes,
When we leave this world of care,
We shall find our missing love one
In our Father’s mansion fair.
