Sarah Ann Dalton married Joseph Kerby/Kirby in Louisville, Jefferson Co., Kentucky on April 27, 1843. Their lives during the early years looked very promising. Joseph was a Stage Coach Driver in the early 1850's. They lived in Nelson Co., KY. Where we believe 3 of their children were born. Sadly baby James passed away there. As the turmoil of the Civil War loomed across States and Territories life became extremely difficult. Joseph moved his family to Muhlenberg Co., KY. by way of Hardin Co., KY. where their 7th child was born in 1855. (We believe Sarah had family there.) In the 1860 Census Joseph & Sarah had a thriving family with 6 of 8 children still surviving. Now Joseph worked as a shingle maker. Joseph enlisted as a Pvt., at Calhoun Co., KY. October 11, 1861 and was discharged due to injuries received at Shiloh, TN. on December 09, 1861 But re-enlisted at Camp Calaway, Hartford, Calhoun Co. KY. the same day. Joseph was stationed in Muhlenberg Co.,KY. with the Company G, 11th Infantry Regiment of Kentucky. On June 25, 1863 their 4th child, son James C. Kirby died and was buried in South Carrollton Cemetery, Muhlenberg Co., KY. Our Family Bible states that on July 04, 1865 Joseph passed away, then their first born Virginia Clarissa Kirby passed on July 14, 1865. Sarah distraught dispersed her children to family members across the USA. But fate was not yet finished with her. On March 08, 1873 her daughter Alice Orenna Kirby died. A broken hearted woman, Sarah died October 14, 1875. It is unknown where she passed or even where she was buried. The 1870 Census found 3 Children remaining... Her second child William Thomas Kirby was in Mobile Ward 8, Mobile, AL. as a Soldier. Her 7th Child Robert Cahoon Kirby was placed in an Orphanage in Louisville, Jefferson Co., KY. near Joseph's brother Harry Kirby. Her 8th child Josephine Henrietta Kirby was found with Sarah's brother Milton Dalton in Cincinnati, Hamilton Co., OH.
