Arthur Boyd Outz III of Lavonia, Georgia, age 76, died at his home on Monday, December 15, 2008. He was born March 30, 1932, in Elberton, Georgia, to the late Arthur Boyd Outz, Jr. and Edna Anderson Outz. He served in the Security Division of the U.S. Army and was stationed overseas from 1953-1956. The long-time educator and coach was a graduate of Elbert County High School and attended Gordon Military College, Wofford College, Presbyterian College, and Peabody College. He was a member of the 1947 All-State Football team. His teaching and coaching experiences include Talullah Falls High School, Stephens County High School, Lavonia High School, and Elbert County High School. In 1958 he was an assistant coach for the Stephens County High School State Championship Football team. He served as principal of Lavonia Elementary from 1973 - 1993 and as the last elected Superintendent of Franklin County Schools from 1993-1997. His fifty years of service in education included serving as Director of Safe Place at Lavonia United Methodist Church. Outz was a charter member of the Lavonia Jay Cees, Sons of the American Revolution, Worshipful Master of the Lavonia Masonic Lodge #241, District Deputy and Worshipful Master of the 8th District, and 33rd Degree Master Mason, Shriner and Demolay. He was a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church where he served as deacon, Sunday School teacher, Sunday School Superintendent, and Brotherhood director. Outz is survived by Katherine, his wife of forty-seven years; daughter and husband, Jennifer and Neal Gaines; daughter and husband, Cher and Bobby Breedlove; four grandchildren, KayLeigh Gaines, Clark Gaines, Bo Breedlove and Bailee Breedlove, all of Lavonia. He was preceded in death by brother, Ronald Outz, and sister, Barbara Outz Rhodes. Funeral services for Outz will be held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, December 18, 2008, at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church. Dr. Ross Layne, Dr. Doug Ferguson, Rev. Doug Goss and Rev. David Wilson will officiate. A graveside service will follow at Pleasant Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be held at Strickland Funeral Home in Lavonia Wednesday from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Memorial gifts may be made to Pleasant Hill Baptist Church Building Fund, 1333 Pleasant Hill Road, Martin, GA 30557.
