James was a lifelong resident of the Tampa Bay area and retired from the U.S. Coast Guard. He was a veteran of the Korean and Vietnam Wars. He was a member of the Riverview Moose Lodge. He is survived by his wife, Gathel; three daughters, Theresa Vaughn, Kathy Yost, and Jaime Snyder; a son, James, Jr.; stepsons, Steve Watkins, John Watkins; his mother, Clara F. Josey; brothers, Earl, Curtis, Lester, Eugene, Grady, and Wayne; and one sister, Livia Stafford.
