William Oliver "W.O." Chambliss' parents were Nancy Anne P. "Nannie" Northington and Robert Bolling Chambliss who were originally from Virginia, lived for a time in Yalobusha County, Mississippi, then settled in Columbia County, Florida sometime before 1858. There were 9 children born to this marriage and 7 made it to adulthood. One sister, Araminta Vashti "Mintie" Chambliss married George Washington Allison, and another, Narcissa A. Chambliss, married John W. Allison, members of the Allison family who also came from Yalobusha, and settled in Florida. Another sister, Mary Jane Chambliss, never married and is buried in Mount Pleasant Cemetery along with W.O. and his wife, Laura, and sister, Antonette Quintilla "Dock" Chambliss, who married John W. Tompkins. Nannie and Robert Chambliss are probably buried on Chambliss family land in Columbia County near the Suwannee County line.
W.O. married Laura V. Hart from Georgia about 1859 and were the parents of at least 4 children, of whom 3 grew to adulthood: Anne "Annie Chambliss (married Charles W. Barwick); Lula Amanda "Sussanna" Chambliss, and John Oliver "Johnnie" Chambliss (married Veda Hart). James Oreal Chambliss died young.
W.O. Chambliss served as a Corporal in Company C, 2nd Florida Infantry, CSA. He was captured at Gettysburg and taken to Fort Delaware as a P.O.W. After a prisoner exchange, he re-entered his unit and was with General Lee at the Surrender at Appomattox Courthouse on 9 Apr 1865. He was again taken to Fort Delaware as a P.O.W. and was forced to sign an Oath of Allegiance on 10 Jun 1865. He was released at that time and walked back to Columbia County, Florida.
