George was the older of two sons born to George and Bertha Huttenstine Rumpilla. He entered the service from Pennsylvania, and served as a Corporal on the USS Wichita (CA-45). He was wounded while fighting at Saipan. He was killed in action during the Battle of Iwo Jima and was awarded the Purple Heart for paying the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.
Because he was buried at sea, George also has a memorial at the Honolulu ABMC Memorial, where his name is listed on the Tablets of the Missing.
