Graveside services for Geraldine Shontz, longtime resident of Terre Haute, Indiana, and formerly of Correctionville, were held at the Correctionville Cemetery at 10 a.m. Friday, July 29, 1978, with Rev. Matt Leach officiating. Ethel Geraldine Shontz was born at Correctionville January 6, 1890, and died at Terre Haute, Indiana, July 23, 1978, at the age of 88. She spent her early life in Correctionville where she attended elementary and high school, graduating in 1907. Science and education were Geraldine's lifelong interests and she pursued them with vigor. She graduated from State University of Iowa in 1912 with a B.A. degree in zoology, then taught at Osage and Atlanta, Iowa, and Hilo, Hawaii, before going to Terre Haute in 1929 where she taught until 1955. Always active in community affairs, she was a member of OES #43, Delta Kappa Gamma (teachers sorority), YWCA, Isaac Walton League, Central Christian Church and was very active in PEO. She was preceded in death by a brother, Basil in 1905, her parents, David B. in 1926 and Daisy C. in 1953 and brother Erle in 1954. She is survived by a nephew, W.D. Shontz of Bozeman, Montana, his wife Kay and three grandnephews, David, Brian and Michael and sister-in-law Helen (Shontz) Backstrom of Ft. Dodge, Iowa.
