Mrs. Cole came to Texas in 1828 and married David Cole, who was at the battle of San Jacinto.

Mr. Cole used to tell with a reasonableness that convinced those well acquainted with him that it was he who captured Santa Anna.

Not long before his death he made the statement below by request; He, with others, were out the day after the battle gathering in scattered Mexicans. Many were being shot.

A Mexican in plain clothes surrendered and begged for his life. He took him behind him on his horse and passing other prisoners, they said "El Presidente," whereupon he acknowledged himself Santa Anna and asked to be carried to Gen. Houston.

At her death Mrs. Cole had a silver cup presented her husband by Santa Anna. She said it was because Mr. Cole saved Santa Anna's life. Mrs. Cole was about 85 years old.
