He was the son of Notsee Shenold and Mable (Charlton) Shenold. He grew up on the family farm one mile west of Hallett with his brothers, George and Melvin and his sister Vina. He married Alma Ellen Ballinger on July 20, 1940, and to this union two sons were born, Gary Ray and Rocky Joe. Alma died July 28, 1962. He later married Pauline Lillian "Polly" Livingston on November 29, 1965, who preceded him in death on January 10, 1992. As a young man he worked for the Civilian Conservation Corp in California. While he was in the CCC, he competed as a Golden Gloves boxer and became known as "Buddie Shenold", who was never defeated. Ray served as a Marine in World War II and was stationed in Guam and China. He was a barber for many years in Stillwater and Glencoe. He was a member of the Glencoe First Baptist Church. He enjoyed wolf and coon hunting, raising animals on his farm, and watching western movies. He had a witty sense of humor and loved sharing his many life stories with his family, who loved him dearly. He was preceded in death by his parents; two wives, Alma and Polly; two brothers George Roy, Melvin Notsee and his wife Freddie; one sister, Vina Adkison and her husband Eddie; grandson Brian Mitchell; nephew Melvin Edward Shenold; and great nephew Chism Keith Shenold. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, November 24, 2008 at Strode Funeral Home Chapel with the Reverend Larry Calvert officiating. Interment will be in Bethel Cemetery, Glencoe, OK.
