Published obituary
Janet (sic) McClaren was born in Williams County, Ohio, May 5, 1847, and died at her home, seven miles Northwest of Edgerton, of heart failure March 17, 1911, aged 63 years, 10 months and 2 days.

In the year of 1857 she with her parents, one brother and two sisters drove overland to Johnson County and settled on a farm five miles Northwest of Gardner. Her father was a native of Ireland, her mother was a native of Pennsylvania and belonged to one of the early pioneer families.

In 1863 she was married to Thomas Burgess, and to their union was born one son, William James Burgess, of Spring Hill, Kansas. In October, 1866 she was married to James Finley. To their union were born eleven children, six girls and five boys; one daughter, Mary Elizabeth, died at the age of 20, and one son in infancy. Of the children only Miss Anna and Clemmons remain at home. Hattie Gottstein lives in DeSoto; John G Finley, Lawrence; Phoebe M Edmondson, Kansas City, Kansas; Sarah T Hill, Gardner, Kansas; Robert C Finley, Prince Rupert, British Columbia; Rhoda L Black, Ottawa, Kansas; and Charles A Finley, Vilas, Colorado.

In 1868 she joined the Methodist Church at Pleasant Valley and remained a faithful Christian until her death. Her best friends were found among her nearest neighbors. Her last words were: "Glory, Hallelujah! I am going to Heaven,"

She leaves to mourn her loss ten children, one sister and a host of relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at the home Sunday, March 26, after which interment was made in the Gardner Cemetery.
