Loren R. Shields, 72, died Saturday at 7:12 p.m. at the St. Joseph Hospital in Ottumwa.

The son of John R. and Selena McFarland Shields, he was born in Wapello county, September 28, 1879. He moved to Batavia seven years ago. He was a member of the MT. Zion Methodist church.

His marriage to Millie Heckart took place February 3, 1901. She preceded him in death March 31, of this year.

He is survived by four sons, Dale of Wichita, Kan., John of Batavia, Clifford of San Diego, Calif., and Ralph of Eldon; two daughters, Mrs. Gladys Allen of Libertyville and Mrs. Eula Warner of Ottuma; 10 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Mrs. Florence Ede of Long Beach, Calif. and Mrs. Rachel Burton of Wichita, Kan.

Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; an infant daughter; one sister, Rhoda Smith; and four brothers, George, William, Ace and J. Newton, who died May 1 of this year.

Funeral services were held Tuesday at 2 p.m. in the Johnson funeral chapel in Ottumwa, in charge of the Rev. LaVerne Morris of the Davis Street Christian church. Burial was made in the Shaul cemetery. Pallbearers were Harley Smith, Spencer Smith, Forrest Smith, Wilbur Shields, Orville Shields and Edgar Shields.
