John Cinton Cotner was the son of Joel and Mary Cotner, natives of North Carolina. John's parents farmed in Tennessee before moving to Missouri about 1845. John's siblings were George W, Julia Ann, Andrew J, born in Tennessee, and Sarah J, William Pinkney, Joel M, Hezakiah C and Mary C Cotner, born in Dade County, Missouri.

John married Amanda Moore Eoff, the daughter of Robert M Eoff and Virgina A Beller, natives respectively of Tennessee and Arkansas. John and Amanda "Mandy" were married February 22, 1877 in Boone County, Arkansas. They were the parents of twelve children born in Arkansas, Texas and Oklahoma. Their children were Alonzo Oscar "Lon", Anna (d.y., Maude, Aver, Denver, Mary "Maggie" (d.y.), Grover Cleveland, Edna, Edgar, Mary Ethel, Virgie and Velma Lee Cotner. John and Amanda farmed in Boone County, Arkansas and moved to farm in Pottawatomie County, Oklahoma by 1900. By 1910 they had settled in Pontotoc County, Oklahoma and lived out their lives in that county, in Steedman.
