Agatha (originally spelled "Agathe") Sifferlen was born Aug. 17, 1814 in Kruth in the upper Thur Valley in Alsace, France. She married Henry Andrew Jacob, Sr. on Jan. 14, 1837 in Alsace. Agatha gave birth to eleven children, all of whom, probably against the odds, survived to adulthood. In 1853 Agatha's husband emigrated to Texas alone, apparently to make preparations for the rest of his family to move there. It must have been hard for Agatha to be left alone in Alsace for two years with their nine children. In December 1855 Agatha and her children also left Alsace, arriving in Texas early in 1856. This voyage had to have been quite a challenging ordeal for the family. The Jacob children were Rosalia who married Adolph Dobsky, Louis who married Caroline Frederich Willeke, Michael who married Mary Bitterly, Anna Marie who married Henry Schier, Henry, Jr. who married Caroline Scheffe, Louisa who married Ernst Riedel, Christina who married Ferdinand Gisler, Sigfried who married Cecelia Grunewald, Pantaleon who married Justine Voegel, Reinhold who married Bertha Afflerbach, and Pauline who married Reinhardt Metz. At some point, some of these branches of the family added an "s" to the family name and their name became "Jacobs." Agatha Sifferlen Jacob died in 1867 and is buried in Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Cemetery in Meyersville, DeWitt County, Texas.
