He married Nancy Ellzey and Susan Leach. James lived in Bedford Co., TN, Lawrence Co., AL and Pike Co., MS before moving to DeSoto Parish in 1841.
He became the first Deputy Sheriff of DeSoto Parish on June 17, 1843. In 1843, he served as Tax Assessor and Collector. He served also as a Constable in DeSoto Parish. In 1855, he became the 5th Mayor of Mansfield.
He is buried beside his wife Nancy but only the footstone is legible. All engraving on his headstone has secumbed to the elements, having been on the ground facing the sky for what appears to be many years. Only the Mason emblem survives. His children and grand children are buried around him.
