Judge Derhammer Dies in 73rd Year:
The community was saddened Saturday to learn that Probate Judge Cloyd W. Derhammer had died late Friday night at Cleveland Clinic hospital after a brief illness.
Probate and juvenile judge for 19 years, he was a former druggist and county clerk of courts from 1937 until 1945 when he resigned to become probate-juvenile judge.
Services in charge of Rev. Robert W. Searles will be held Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. at the Waite Memorial home. Burial will be in the LeRoy cemetery.
Calling hours at Waite's are 7 to 9 p.m. Monday.
Out of respect to the memory of Judge Derhammer, the court house will close Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. for the remainder of the day.
Judge Derhammer, whose wife, Ada, died July 13, 1942 has no living relatives.
Born in Akron 72 years ago, Judge Derhammer was raised by his grandparents in Doylestown, his parents dying when he was three years old. His parents are William Henry Derhammer and wife Mary Fritz Derhammer.
He graduated from Doylestown high school and Ohio State College of Pharmacy in 1916. His early days as pharmacist found him working in the drug stores in Columbus, Marysville and Akron.
He enlisted in the army in WWI and served overseas for 14 months. Upon his discharge from the army, Judge Derhammer formed a partnership with E. H. Sears in the drug business in Wadsworth, continuing the occupation as a druggist for 17 years, until he was elected county clerk of courts in 1936.
Upon his election to county office, Judge Derhammer moved to Medina, where he had since resided. It was while serving as clerk of courts that he attended Cleveland Law school, later passing the state bar.
His wife was serving as deputy clerk at the time of her death. He was appointed probate judge in 1945 by Gov. Frank Lausche to succeed Judge W. E. Kellogg, who resigned to become an attorney for the Cleveland office of the Veterans administration. Judge Derhammer's term expires in 1966.
The jurist was also very active in veterans affairs, having served as first commander of the Medina V. F. W. post an also was the first commander of the county V. F. W. council.
He was also a past commander of the Wadsworth V. F. W. post, and was a member of the American Legion for 45 years.
He held membership in the Wadsworth Masonic lodge, Medina K., of P., lodge, was a 32nd degree Mason and a member of Tadmor Shrine in Akron.
