Shelah Waters served in the Civil War and was also an early Tennessee cave explorer. Shelah explored such notable caves as Hubbard Cave and Higgenbotham Cave which is now known as Cumberland Caverns. Oct 1, 1869 he left a smoked date and signature on Higgenbotham Cave ceiling. (A practice not suitable today).
