Carrel Lee Harding, 86, a retired Air Force chief master sergeant, took his "final flight" Thursday, Dec. 4, 2008.
Funeral: 3:30 p.m. Monday in Greenwood Chapel. Entombment: Greenwood Mausoleum. Visitation: 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Greenwood Funeral Home.
Sgt. Harding was born June 25, 1922, on a family farm near Beaver City, Neb., to Thomas Logan Harding and Garnet McProud Harding. He graduated from Beaver City High School in May 1940.
In November 1940, he enlisted in the Army Air Corps. During World War II, he spent three years in the European theater, serving in England, North Africa, Sardinia, Corsica, France and Austria, with the 432nd Bomb Squad, 17th Bomb Group. He made master sergeant in May 1945 at age 22 (the youngest in his squad). Other foreign service was in Korea, Japan and Formosa. In September 1962, he retired as chief master sergeant with 22 years of service.
Before going overseas in 1942, he met the "love of his life," Bess Kuhn, while stationed at Barksdale Air Force Base, La. Immediately upon his return to the States, they were married Oct. 13, 1945, in Bossier City, La. From this union was born two loving daughters, Patty Jane and Linda Kay. They enjoyed 63 years of wedded bliss. After his retirement from the Air Force, he worked for John Hancock Insurance Co., Sears, Arlington Memorial Hospital, Fort Worth National Bank and General Dynamics, as a technical writer on the F-111.
In 1975, he retired completely and he and his wife traveled the U.S. extensively in their travel trailer.
He was a life member of VFW 8235, 7th BW, B-36 Association, 17th Bomb Group Reunion Association and was active in White Settlement Senior Center, until his health failed.
He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, and an all-around super human being. He took great pride in his family and service to his country. He may be gone but he lives on in the hearts of his loved ones, as they remember the values he set for them. Another passing of one of this nation's "Greatest Generation."
He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Garnet Harding; stepmother, Marie Harding; brother, Guy Harding; and stepbrother, Clarence Fleming.
Survivors: Wife and soulmate, Bess; daughters, Patty LeJeune and husband, John, and Kay Benton and husband, Larry; grandchildren, Lisa Benton Collett, Robert Benton and Patty Benton McGinnis, John LeJeune III and Dawne LeJeune Schwartz; great-grandchildren, Rachel, Ashley, Elizabeth, Paige, Julie, Johnathan, Joshua, Bradon, Madison, Macy and Matthew; and sister-in-law, Dorothy Fleming.
