Fred Aikman was born in Clinton, Iowa in 1864 and there he spent his childhood days. He was the son of Henry James Aikman and Anna Atchison. Brother George and sister, Pearl, completed the family. Fred acquired valuable experience in the early years as a cowhand, riding for the large outfits including the Cross Anchor, Hash Knife and the VVV. When the C&NW Railroad was completed to Belle Fourche, SD the first trainload of cattle to be shipped to market, was furnished by the VVV Outfit, owned by Henry Weare of Spearfish. He selected his top hand, Fred, to take charge of this shipment going to Chicago. On Thanksgiving Day in 1893, Fred and Katherine Morrell were married in Spearfish. Katherine was teaching school on Oak Creek, near the 2A Ranch, when they first met. Their children were William, Samuel Henry, and Esther Helen (Turner). -- info from "Pioneers of Crook County"
