Jake Ard, 36, of Cowden, former Piatt County resident, and two daughters: Rosemary, 2 ½ yrs; and Donna Lee, 3 mos. Old, were instantly killed about 9 a.m. Sunday, June 10, 1945 when the truck in which they were riding was struck by a Nickle Plate freight train, 2 miles east of Herrick. Mrs. Ard, the former Hazel Taylor of Bement, was critically injured, and a son, Harold, 5, was slightly hurt receiving only a few scratches. Mrs. Ard was taken to the Effingham hospital. The family was enroute to Sunday School at Free Methodist Church at Cowden at the time of the accident.

Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at the Free Methodist Church and from there burial was made in the Monticello cemetery.

Mr. Ard leaves his parents, Mr. and Mrs. James Ard, Bement; and four brothers: Staff Sgt James Ard Jr., now home on a furlough after serving 33 months overseas; Peter of Hammond; Ora of Gary IN; and John William of Ivesdale; and two sisters: Mrs. Calvin Poundstone and Mrs. Stanley Shonkwiler, Bement.
