He was born March 18, 1855, on a farm in what was then Randolph County but is now Clay County, Alabama. He was the only child of Benjamin Asbury Clements and Tempe Ferrill Clements.

He was married twice.
First wife was Sophia Thomas, daughter of Jonathan and Sarah Ann (Torbert) Thomas. They married December 17, 1876.

Children by Sophia:
Edna Earle Clements (married Dr. Elbert Tyle Fields)
Victor Hugo Clements
Dr. Merit DeWitt Clements
Bennie Thomas Clements (died in infancy)

Second wife was Emma Roberts, daughter of Rev. F. M. and Mary S. (Burton) Roberts. They married July 21, 1890.
