Clarence "Lee" Benton, 83, of Whaleyville and formerly of Salisbury died Tuesday, November 4, 2008 at Peninsula Regional Medical Center.
Born in Baltimore he was the son of the late Clarence Leo Benton, Sr. and Jane Gallagher Benton.
Mr. Benton served in the United States Army 91st Division in the European Theatre of Operations. He was the former owner of Benton's Auto Sales in Odenton, a former Baltimore City Police Officer, and a former Baltimore Harbor Tunnel Police Officer with the rank of Lieutenant. After moving to the Eastern Shore he worked at several area car dealerships and most recently at the Moose Lodge in Salisbury. He was a member of the Moose in Salisbury, lifetime member of the Warren #51 AF and AM in Cockeysville and AARP.
He is survived by his wife of nine months Pauline Hastings Benton; two sons, William Earl Benton, Sr. and his wife, Betty, of Glen Burnie and Ricky Jack Benton and his wife, Elizabeth, of Parsonsburg; three grandchildren, Amy Lichtenstein, Earl Benton, and Holly Greenfield; two great-grandchildren, Pamela and Morgan Greenfield; four stepchildren, Ronald Hastings and his wife, Carolyn, Donald Hastings and his wife, Patsy, Sharon Lewis and her husband, Eddie, and David Hastings and his wife, Kim; six step grandchildren; two step great-grandchildren; a sister, Eileen B. Hofler of Millersville, MD and a special niece, Debbie Hofler.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years Anna Mae Benton in 2003; a sister, Betty Plienis in 2000; and a brother, Jerry Benton in 1973.
A funeral service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Bounds Funeral Home on East Main Street in Salisbury. Interment will follow in Springhill Memory Gardens in Hebron. Friends may call Friday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
