Daughter of Henry and Sarah Ann Burgess Donahue.

Sister of Octavia Donahue, Warner Donahue, Hulda Jane Donahue, Hayden John Donahue, Absolom R Donahue, Miranda Permitta Donahue, James Kelsey Donahue, and Henry Leon Donahue.

Henry and Sarah left Cedar, Iowa when Julia was eleven years old and became early pioneers of Wyandotte County, Kansas. On November 21, 1881 Julia married a widower, Dr Periander Carlton Newton raising a small child, Jennie L Newton, and she joined them at their residence on Parallel Road, in the community of White Church in Wyandotte County.

The children born to Periander and Julia were Abigail Eleanor Newton, Robert Henry Newton, Grace Miranda Newton, James Thomas Newton, Fern Newton, and Perry Carlton Newton.

After her husbands death in 1903, she continued to personally supervise their 276 acre home, Oak Mound, for 34 years.

On April 18, 1938 she left behind her children, along with eleven grandchildren, Julia Newton Carl, Daniel Carl, Gale Shelton Newton, Roberta J Newton, Josephine Lulu Newton, Virginia Lee Dail, Dorothy Jama Newton, Mary Eileen Newton, Julia Donahue Newton, Susan Lois Newton, Ettamae Luverna Newton, and seven great-grandchildren, Gale Shelton Newton, Mabel May Cotter, Paul Raymond Cotter, Marilyn Joan Cotter, Barbara Lou Penny, Harriet Maxine Meade, and Margaret May Meade.
