Mary Mendenhall, daughter of Ira and Sarah Ballard Mendenhall, was born in Morgan County, IN, November 4, 1826; was married to Amos Barnett in Mooresville, IN, Aug 30, 1849. She departed this life at Earlham, Iowa, at the home of her daughter, Laura Jackson, May 20, 1909, at the age of 82 yrs, 6 mos, and 16 days. To this union was born a family of eleven children, 2 of whom, with her husband preceded her to the better land.
Amos Barnett journeyed from Iowa to Indiana in a covered wagon to claim his worthy helpmate.
In the spring of 1859 they started on a long tedious journey across the plains to Washington, with their family. Traveling in a prairie schooner drawn by an ox team, it took almost 5 months to make the trip and this, in a new country, they experienced many hardships.
After seven years, they returned to Iowa where she lived ever since.
Three daughters and one son were with her at the time of her death, the other two daughters and 4 sons being unable to be present.
She was a life long member of the Friends Church and remained faithful to the end.
During her long sickness, a period of 20 months, Aunt Mary bore with patience as only a true Christian can, showing the example set by one who was ready and had longed to pass to her Great Reward.
Funeral services were held Friday afternoon at the house of her daughter, Mrs. Laura Jackson, conducted by Rev. John Stribling. Internment was in Earlham Cemetery.
