She was born Feb. 17, 1922, in Knox County to Robert D. and Cora I. (Hough) McCord. She married Donald R. Strange on May 1, 1951. He preceded her in death Dec. 21, 2002.
Joan was a retired registered occupational therapist and was employed at Wishard Memorial Hospital from 1946 until 1949 and Indiana University Medical Center from 1949 until 1951 in Indianapolis.
She was a member of Orleans Christian Church, Paoli Tri Kappa and Phi Mu Sorority at Hanover College. She received a bachelor of arts degree from Hanover College and received certification as an occupational therapist registered from Boston School of Occupational Therapy. She was president of the Indiana Occupational Therapy Association.
Survivors include two sons, David R. Strange of Greenwood and Mark E. Strange of Liberal, Kan.; a daughter, Ellen M. Strange of Indianapolis; a brother, Robert McCord of Indianapolis; a sister, Doris Briggs of Olympia, Wash.; five grandchildren, Matthew and Adrienne Leech, both of Franklin, Bethany Strange of Greenwood, and Spencer and James Sheets, both of Indianapolis; and a great-grandchild, Landin Leech of Franklin.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.
A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Orleans Christian Church, 319 S. Maple St., with Nelson Lee and Shan Rutherford officiating. Burial will follow in Stampers Creek Cemetery in Paoli. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Friday at Ochs-Tetrick Funeral Home, 187 E. Jefferson St. in Orleans, and from 9:30 a.m. until service Saturday at the church.
