Joseph was born at Norton, Durham, England.
In 1841 he still lived at Norton shown as a laborer.
His marriage to
wife: Isabella on 29 October 1842 was at Norton,
registered Q4 1842 at Stockton, Durham.
In 1851 still at Norton, he is described as an agricultural laborer.
On 5 May 1855, he emigrated on board S.S. "Juventa" heading to Philadelphia, the passengers listed as 610 Mormons.
Isabella died while crossing the plains near Fort Laramie, Wyoming in August 1855.
She is the daughter of John Vest and Mary Ann Potter Vest.
In 1856 he resides at 11th Ward Gsl City, Salt Lake County, Utah, and in 1860 at Dwelling 2356, Great Salt Lake City (US Federal census 31 Aug 1860).
In 1860 he appears to have married
wife number two: Harriet Bradshaw,
although there is no trace of a marriage record.
On 11 May 1866 he enlisted as a private in
Daniel Stark's Co. Infantry to serve in
Blackhawk War.
