William was a son of William and Sarah (Barnes) Campbell. He married Elizabeth Hinds in Sheffield, Massachusetts then followed his parents to Grand Isle, Vermont, a group of islands in Lake Champlain. They settled in South Hero and raised a family of at least ten children. About 1818, when their youngest child was eight years old, they moved again to Cambria, Niagara Co., New York. William donated land for the first cemetery in Cambria which bears his name and on which many of his family members were buried.
