John B. Howard was raised in a poor family - his father died when John was 7 – nonetheless he was able to achieve a substantial education. At 23 he began the study of medicine at Elizabethtown, Kentucky and in 1848 he accompanied a friend, apothecary Edward H. Haycraft, to the promising young town of St. Joseph, Missouri. There they formed a partnership, but soon Dr. Howard's practice grew to such an extent that he established his own office. About this time he met Sarah C. Herndon; they married in 1851. The Howards remained in St. Joseph where they raised their children and John was a respected physician. By 1889, 4 of their children had moved to Kansas City, Missouri and John and Sarah were persuaded to retire and move there as well. In July, 1892 Dr. Howard suffered a paralysis and was returned to St. Joseph. He died early the next year at Ensworth Hospital there.
