Edward served as a Private in the Civil War, in Co B, 15th Illinois Infantry (the same unit as his brother Fordyce). He enlisted for 3 years and served from 24 May 1861 to 24 May 1864, when he was discharged at Huntsville, AL.

He married Deborah (Warren) Keeney, widow of Joseph Frank Keeney, on 28 January 1866 in Kankakee Co, IL

According to his obituary, Edward was survived by his wife and seven children. Those children would have been:
- Ida A (Lee) (Alford) MacNabb, born 1861 (daughter of Edward's 1st wife Elizabeth Davis/Davey)
- John E Lee, born 1840
- Laura Mae (Lee) Myers, born 1868
- Elmer W Lee, born 1870

- stepson William F Keeney, born 1859 (son of Edward's wife Deborah and her 1st husband Joseph Frank Keeney)
