Statement provided by Jen Nelson (member # 51434898): "Squire Crume is one of my 4th great-Grandfathers. It saddens me deeply to have learned through exploration of historical documents that, per the 1850 and 1860 US Census for Nelson County, KY, he was a Slave Owner. Per the 1850 U.S. Federal Census - Slave Schedules, he was a Slave Owner and Enslaved 9 Persons (5 Male Persons and 4 Female Persons). Per the 1860 U.S. Federal Census - Slave Schedules, he was a Slave Owner and Enslaved 14 Persons (9 Male Persons and 5 Female Persons). It is an unfortunate reality of the history of our Country, and in turn of our Family, but I do not believe it should be ignored. If I happen to find the names of any of the People who were enslaved by my 4th great-Grandfather, I will create FindAGrave Memorials for those Enslaved Persons to be recognized and remembered."
