Katherine Ann Crowe-Williams 66, of Washington D.C. passed away Sunday, November 9, 2008 at the American Village Assisted Living and Health Care Center in Indianapolis. Katherine was born October 5, 1942 and was the daughter of Ray Province Crowe and Mary Elizabeth Sanders Crowe. Her parents preceded her in death. Katherine received her early education in Indianapolis Public Schools (IPS #36 and #87), graduating from Crispus Attucks High School in 1959. She attended Howard University in Washington D.C. where she earned her Bachelor of Arts and Master of Education degrees. She was a proud member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. Katherine lived the majority of her adult life in Washington where she became a member of Metropolitan African Methodist Episcopal Church. She faithfully served on the Steward Board and Hospitality Club. Accomplished in her professional life, Kathy, as she was called by friends and family, became the administrator and State Director of the District of Columbia's Rehabilitation Services Administration and Commissioner of Social Services, both appointments in the District of Columbia Department of Human Services. She was the first female to hold position and one of four African American state vocational rehabilitation directors in the United States. Kathy retired in 1997 after serving with District of Columbia for over 22 years as a public servant specializing in government programs for persons with disabilities. She is survived by her sister, Linda Crowe-Knight; brothers, Larry Ray (Amy) and Lloyd Edward Crowe and step-mother, Betty E. Crowe. In addition to her loving companion of 15 years, Dr. William Washington, Jr., Kathy also leaves behind to cherish her memory uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and many friends. The calling will be Monday, November 17 from Noon to 2 p.m. at Washington Park North Cemetery and Funeral Center, 2706 Kessler Blvd. W. Dr., Indianapolis, IN 46228. The funeral will begin immediately following the calling at 2 p.m. at the same location. Memorial contributions may be made to Metropolitan A.M.E. Church, 1518 "M" St., N.W. Washington D.C. 20005.She was a longtime resident of Washington, D.C.
Interment followed funeral services conducted Monday, November 17, 2008.
