Listed in early records as Thomas Owston, Gentleman and in some records as Captain Thomas Owston.

Although his tombstone has an incorrect birth year of 1802, North Leith, Midlothian, Scotland parish records confirm that he was born on 14 March 1804 and christened on 21 March 1804.

Oldest child of William Owston and Frances Wilson.

Thomas served as a Midshipman in the Royal Navy during the Napoleonic Wars. For his service in the Navy, he was granted acreage in Asphodel and Smith Townships in Peterborough County, Ontario in the 1820s.

Left Canada in about 1828 and returned to Scotland where he was a captain of merchant vessels.

Returned to Canada by 1830 where he was a merchant in Port Hope. He returned to Scotland in 1831.

Returned to Canada in 1834 and moved to Rochester, NY in 1835 where he was a merchant. He suffered loss in the fire of 1837.

Moved to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1838 where he was engaged in running numerous hotels in the city for 20 years. These include the Waverly House, the Eagle Hotel, the Exchange Hotel, the United States Hotel, and the Ashland Hotel. Owston suffered loss again in the fire of 1845.

Naturalized as a US citizen in the US District Court in Allegheny County, PA on 27 October 1840.

A member of Masonic Lodge #45 of Pittsburgh, PA. Achieved Entered Apprentice December 27, 1844; Fellow Craft January 3, 1845; and Master Mason March 5, 1845.

Was the chair of the Pittsburgh European Relief Committee in 1851.

Was appointed as a Pittsburgh City Alderman circa 1860 to 1869.

Removed to Oil City circa 1872.

Married Agnes Douglas on 17 March 1829 in North Leith, Midlothian, Scotland and the couple had the following children:

Margaret Owston
Jane Gillon Owston
Frances W. Owston
Charles William Owston

Following his wife Agnes' death he married A. Georgiana (last name not known, but thought to be Hill) in Pittsburgh; they had one child:

Alida Alden Owston Hutchins
