Mary Pittaway was born In Liberties, Worcestershire, England, daughter of John Pittaway and Mary Willis. Her first child was the child of Abraham Lewis. Mary and Abraham did not marry. Abraham was married to someone else.

She later married John Godfrey 15 September 1845. They became the parents of nine more children. She immigrated to Utah in 1862 with her husband and most of their children. They came on the ship "William Tapscot" arriving in New York City. Then they traveled by train to Winter Quarters, NE and then by wagon train in the Henry W. Miller company. They arrived in Salt Lake City on Oct 10 1862. They first lived in Mendon but finally settled in Clarkston, UT.

Mary had a very difficult time in Utah as did most pioneers. Her 17 year old son, Joseph, drowned in the Bear River in 1866 when the settlers were abandoning their land near the Bear River and were en route to Smithfield. This was during troubles with the Shoshone. She lived in poverty most of her life, but insisted on a very clean home. It is said she had piercing brown eyes which many of her descendents also have.

She divorced John and never remarried. Her divorce was final on 4 January 1872 in Logan, Utah. Four years later John did remarry to Olina Thalseth.
