John Offutt, 59, Dies of Cancer

Omaha architect John L. Offutt, a former president of the Omaha Symphony Association and a director of Joslyn Art Museum, died Thursday at Immanuel Medical Center.

Family members said Offutt, 59, of 3419 S. 102nd St., had been ill with cancer.

Offutt was a nephew of Lt. Jarvis J. Offutt, the first U.S. airman to die in World War I and the man for whom Offutt Air Force Base is named. John Offutt was the son of Jarvis Offutt's brother, the late Casper Y. Offutt.

John Offutt had operated his own architectural firm in Omaha since 1968. Before starting his own business, he worked 10 years for an Omaha contracting and architectural firm.

Offutt specialized in residential and commercial projects.

He designed several homes for unusually shaped lots in Omaha, and he sought to retain the natural shapes of the property with the homes, said his wife, Marilyn, an interior designer. She worked with her husband on the interior design of some of the dwellings.

Offutt received a bachelor's degree in architecture from Iowa State University and a master's degree from the Cranbrook Academy of Fine Arts in Bloomfield Hills, Mich.

He was active in the Omaha Symphony Association and served two terms as president, two terms as treasurer and as chairman of the association's sustaining membership committee.

At the time of his death, he was a member of both the symphony board of directors and the Joslyn board. Offutt also was a past president of the Omaha Club.

In addition to his wife, Offutt is survived by a daughter, a son a brother, a sister, ; and three grandchildren. (Note: Survivors names and addresses removed)

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at First United Methodist Church, 7020 Cass St. John A. Gentleman Westside Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
