Bernice Sumrall Hurst, of Laurel, passed away Sunday, November 23, 2008, in Knoxville, Tenn., where she lived for the past year since the death of her husband.Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, November 26, at Jones Funeral Home in Ellisville. The Rev. Harold Ishee will officiate. Burial will be in Sunset Gardens Cemetery in Laurel.Mrs. Hurst was a long-time resident of the Pendorff Community where she was a member of Harmony Baptist Church. She worked for the Masonite Corporation for several years, prior to starting her family. She later was a bookkeeper for their family businesses.She was an avid gardener who enjoyed spending much of her spare time working with her flowers. It gave her great joy to share them with friends and family.She was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas Clinton and Erma Davidson Sumrall of Ovett; brother, Joseph Thomas Sumrall of Warner Robins, Ga.; and her husband of 63 years, Allen W. Hurst.Survivors include her sons, Ronnie Hurst of Laurel and Torye Hurst of Blacksburg, Va.; daughter, Pamela Hurst McClain and husband George of Knoxville, Tenn.; and five granchildren, Kyle Hurst and wife Casey of Laurel, Matthew Hurst of Lafayette, La., Chad Hurst of Sumrall, Maris McClain Garner and husband Cager of Memphis, Tenn., and Lauren McClain of Jackson.Pallbeares will be grandsons Kyle Hurst, Matthew Hurst, and Chad Hurst, and nephews, Joe Sumrall, Billy Goodgame, and Cager Garner.Visitation will be from 1 until 2:45 p.m. Wednesday, prior to the service at 3 p.m., at Jones Funeral Home in Ellisville, which is in charge of the arrangements.
