Mathew James Nelson was the son of Archibald Nelson and Rebecca McBride. The Nelson family migrated from Pennsylvania to Jones County, Iowa in the 1850's. James enlisted along with his brother, Samuel, in Company H, 31st Reg. Iowa Infantry. Unfortunately they both died in the same month, and same year from "disease" (from the Civil War). He was 17 years old when he died, and his brother was 23 years old.
